All About Working on the WIKI

Hi there MetalMama! Michele asked me to speak with you about working on the wiki. She is busy right now, so she sent me some of the questions that you had. I'm happy to assist as best I can. Firstly allow me to introduce myself! On here, my name is Rose Quartz, but I am on many Webkinz sites as Blythe so feel free to call me that. I recognize your name as a long standing member in the Webkinz community but I'm not sure we ever have spoken. If not, it is great to meet you. I have written some of the questions she sent me that you had in bold and an answer under it. As I said, do not hesitate to ask me on here or facebook if you have any questions.

Messaging Wiki Members There are currently 3 people working on the wiki (now 4 with you) and those are Michele, Myself, and DisneyPrincess. Anytime you see one of our names, you'll see it says something like Rose Quartz (Talk| Contribs| Block). Clicking on talk will bring up the user talk page for that member. So if you click talk on mine you'll be taken to a page called User Talk: Rose Quartz. Everyone has a user talk page. This is where we can communicate back and forth to each other. Whenever someone posts on your user talk page you'll get a notification on the home page when you're signed in alerting you of a new message. Clicking it will bring up your talk page and you can read new messages there. You can leave notes on other pages too, but they don't notify the member. If you really want someone to see your message, its best to leave it on the page that says User Talk: Their name.

Getting Images Michele posted a guide below on how to get images. I'll post it again here with extra information.

Okay so the first thing you need is the URL above. A URL as you know is the link to a website or a page within a website. All websites have URLs. Here is the URL above:
[1]
The one above is to a link of the Coconut Pineapple Smoothie. In the Webkinz World Database every single item has a unique number. So the number in the URL #13410 corresponds to the Coconut Pineapple Smoothie. No other item has that number. The only thing you're concerned about in the URL is the number section. If we want to find another item picture, we just need to change that number. Changing the number by 1 to 13411 gives us the Pirate Ship Playhouse. Changing it down a number to 13409 gives us the Coconut Pineapple Smoothie Maker.

  • The number you see in the URL is the item's number in the Webkinz Database.

Michele then tells us this. I skipped a little ahead in my explanation above. The number is the most important part. You don't really need the rest of it. That's all you'll ever change. Make sure when you change the number you don't accidentally erase anything else or the link won't work. When you change the number, hit enter on your keyboard to be taken to the new page.

It would be very challenging to find any item if we didn't know numbers! Suppose we're looking for the Cheeky Cat Range. What number do we pick? There are thousands of numbers in the Webkinz Database. We do not want to go through each number to find the cheeky cat range. That would be time consuming. So, click the link above. This is a list of all items in webkinz world and their numbers. So, if you go to that page and hit CTRL + F on your keyboard it brings up a little pop up in your window. If you've never used this before, it is a way to easily search for a entry on a page. Type in cheeky cat range and enter on your keyboard. Your computer will automatically find results for cheeky cat range. Hitting enter again takes you to the next match, if any. It will tell you how many results there are. In this case, there is only one. To the left of Cheeky Cat Range we see the number 899. Go back to the URL above and replace the 13410 in the URL with 899. Hit enter and you'll see the cheeky cat range show up.

  • This is what I do for all images, get the pictures using the Item Number and save them.

To save the image, hit CTRL + S on your keyboard. It will bring up the window for saving images. The format is automatically PNG and the size will be automatic do no resizing needed. For names, we name things based on what they are so we don't have to continuously upload them. When naming a file, make sure to name it just like it is listed in webkinz world. Don't add any spaces and only capitalize the first letter. So, saving the Cheeky Cat Range would be Cheekycatrange. Saving the Coconut Pineapple Smoothie would be named Coconutpineapplesmoothie. Once you name it hit enter to save it. It is important you name them correctly. The wiki is very sensitive to capital letters. Unlike emails where caps don't matter here a CoconutPineappleSmoothie.png is different than Coconutpineapplesmoothie. They're two different files.

  • Once I have the images saved to my computer, I use the Multi Upload Tool to upload them to the WPG.

Once saved, Michele then goes to the link above. You can upload images one at a time or multiple at a time. Try to do no more than 20 at once or it will mess up. To upload an image, it is similar to any other site. You browse your computer for the image and select the one you wish to upload.

  • In my experience, only 20 images will upload at one time.
  • Not much to it, really. Though sometimes the wiki can be finicky, and a page won't show uploaded images unless you edit the page, and then hit save changes.
  • Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions!

Now What? Finding out what to do on the wiki can be challenging. Where do you start? What to work on? Michele mentioned that you'll be mostly uploading images. If you ever are lost on what images you need to upload, feel free to ask one of us! Alternatively, anything that shows up RED is not uploaded or created yet. For example look at the two images below.

We know the Arte Holiday Plush image is uploaded because there it is! But, the apple one is not because the link is in red. So, an image for the apple can be uploaded using the steps above. If you'd like, you can try and upload it yourself! Let us know if you have any questions, and we'll try and assist as best we can.
