Editing Guidelines

General Rules

  1. Scope: Keep to the topic of Webkinz, including Next, Junior, Friends, and physical merchandise. Please do not upload unrelated files or write unrelated articles. Keep all off-topic conversation within personal talk pages.
  2. References: It is ideal to include references on article pages, so please source your information when editing. Also, use official sources and files and avoid uploading personally taken photos or videos. More details are under "Files" below.
  3. Bias: Keep all information accurate and factual and do not post speculation or opinions onto articles. Non-canon information may only be included if it is notable.
  4. Duplicates: Make sure you're not posting a duplicate file or article before creating or uploading one.
  5. Spelling, Grammar, and Punctuation: Make sure to write articles conforming to American English proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. The spelling of a Webkinz-specific word should follow the canon source in the game, Webkinz Newz, or the released physical item.

Best Practices

  • Conciseness: When writing, be concise. Only include notable information and summarize if information is lengthy. For example, a pet's page should include the day they were released. However, it would be unnecessary to point out if that pet came out after a certain other pet. While the statement could be true, it wouldn't be noteworthy enough to write.
  • Partitioning: There does not need to be a page for every subject. For example, the Employment Office jobs wouldn't need their own pages, and are able to be easily organized on the Employment Office article. This goes for categories as well: for example, there are existing categories to list characters and would not need an article page to list them out too.
  • Consultation: Before starting large projects, making sweeping changes, or speaking on behalf of the entire wiki, consult other editors for their input.
  • Redirects: Avoid redirects by naming pages conscientiously. If you need to rename a page, remember to edit the page everywhere else it appears via Special:WhatLinksHere. If the page requires a redirect due to being referenced externally, delete them after three months.
  • Namespaces: If a page will be under construction for a long time due to long-dormant research opportunities, little free time, or other reasons, create it as a subpage of your user page, then move it to mainspace when it's presentable.
  • Discord: We have a Discord server for talking shop; feel free to join if you need more help.

User Permissions

All pages are protected to users who have registered and confirmed their email address; some pages are protected to sysops only.

There are three tiers of manually-assigned user permissions. All promotions are granted on a case-by-case basis.

  1. Trainee: New editors are assigned this group for a default three months as a trial run. This is a custom group with permission to edit pages protected to sysops only. If you're interested in becoming one, drop in our Discord server and introduce yourself! All of Webkinz Guide's Trainees are listed here.
  2. Editor: Consistently meaningful contributor. This is the sysop default group. All of Webkinz Guide's Editors are listed here.
  3. Bureaucrat: Trusted senior editors who also have administrator-type duties. This is the bureaucrat default group. All of Webkinz Guide's Bureaucrats are listed here.

Pages

Visual Master List

The Visual Master List is a list of all the in-game assets ordered by asset number. It is updated once per month, mirroring Webkinz maintenance. If you are not responsible for the Visual Master List, do not edit it during maintenance. These pages are protected to sysops only.

Picture Guide

The Webkinz Picture Guide contains pictures of every item in Webkinz sorted by how the item was obtained/released. Assets are manually added to their correct page on the Picture Guide after either their canon announcement or in-game release. These pages are protected to sysops only.

Item Guide

The Webkinz Item Guide is a list of every officially released Webkinz item, sorted by how the item was released. Release date, availability, and tradeability are mandatory fields; others are added where relevant. Reference with the method of obtaining the item if different from its original release and add primary sources where possible. Do not include trading values for items that are not directly purchasable. These pages are protected to sysops only.

Where a conflict exists between the Item Guide and any other page regarding an item's availability, the Item Guide is almost always correct.

Archives

The Archives are historical logs of items available on wheels, newspaper articles, eStore promotions, or other relevant subjects. These pages are protected to sysops only.

Theme Pages

The pages in Webkinz Room Themes showcase room themes. Include minimal or future-proof ledes and item availability, and follow the canon source on inclusion or exclusion of theme items where available.

Collection Pages

Collectors of certain items can reference the Item Collections, Clothing Collections, Food Collections, or Pet Collections pages. Some pages are bound by a canon Webkinz feature (e.g. Border Buildings Collection), others are based off of editor judgement (e.g. Red Clothing Collection). These pages are manually maintained, and anyone can add or maintain a page for a collection of their interest.

Information and Guides

Information and Guides contains deep-dives or reverse-engineered explanations of events or mechanisms. Feel free to write your own on your Webkinz area of expertise.

Files

  • Names: In-game assets need to be its in-game name, with no spaces or punctuation e.g. "Will 'o the Wisp Floor Lamp" becomes "Willothewispfloorlamp.png", and any pets are named its in-game name + "avatar", e.g. "Lil' Kinz Oriole" becomes "Lilkinzorioleavatar.png". In the case of an in-game name conflict, add the year of the later item before the regular file name e.g. "2021elephantavatar.png". For non-assets, try to follow the naming conventions of preceding files in the same collection. Otherwise, give files short and appropriate names that relate to the content of the files.
  • Format: Different types of files have different rules, which will be listed below:
    • Pet and Item Images: Images need to be 120x120 px on a transparent background. No in-game screenshots are allowed.
    • Room Theme Images: File name should be theme name + theme preview with no spaces or punctuation, e.g. "Winter Patio Theme" becomes "Winterpatiothemepreview.png." Try to include as many theme items as possible and exclude non-theme items.
    • Game Images: Must be a screenshot, whether using the screenshot tool in Webkinz World itself, or with a built-in tool from your computer or phone. Personally taken pictures using a camera is not allowed, unless no other versions of that image exists.
    • Webkinz Social Media/Blog Images: Must source what article or post the image originated from on the file's page.
    • Plush Images: Must be of clear quality. Cannot be personally taken.
    • Videos: Unless it cannot be found anywhere else, it must be from an official source.
    • Audio: Audio should be either stereo-mix recorded from your computer or ripped from programming.
